Scuba Diving Training FAQ's

Underwater Adventures

What is the Open Water Diver course?
The Open Water Diver course is the entry level scuba diving certification class.   The course has an academic component (combination of independent study and classroom), pool sessions, and open water training.  Once you have completed this course you will have a certification card that allows you to dive anywhere in the world.

What are the requirements to start?
You have to be at least 10 years old, generally in good health and reasonably fit.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?
You only have to be an adequate swimmer to take the Open Water Diver course.  It is more important that you are comfortable in the water.

What types of things will we be doing in the Open Water course?
In the Knowledge portion, we will discuss and review important diving concepts.  For the Pool Sessions, we don the equipment and practice a number of skills in a safe, supportive, and fun environment.  Then we demonstrate those same skills during the Open Water Training and have fun exploring what it’s like to be underwater.

What equipment do I need?
As part of each class, we provide the basic gear (regulator, buoyancy compensator, tanks and weights) for all pool sessions.  You will need to purchase your personal fit equipment – mask, fins, snorkel, and boots.  As part of the orientation on the first day of class we will help you select the most appropriate and properly fitting equipment to use for the class and for the diving you will do once you are certified.

How much does it cost?
The total cost of the program depends on the specifics of the training and the gear you select.   We try to customize the program for you and give you different pricing options depending on your needs.  Call us or stop by the store to see how we can customize a program for you.

How long does it take?
The Open Water Course is usually completed in four combined classroom/pool sessions plus the Open Water Training (done over a weekend).  For smaller classes, or if time is an important consideration, the program may be completed sooner or accelerated to meet your deadline.

What do I need to do if I would like to dive on vacation?
Depending on your timeframe, you can complete the entire course here and get your temporary certification card prior to your trip (May – Oct.), or you can do the Knowledge and Pool Sessions here and finish your training while on vacation via a referral.
